Conflict and Resolution

The conflict in this book is pretty obvious. It is a girl not having choices about her body. So she goes and files a lawsuit against her parents for the right of her own body. Her parents freak out because they know that they won’t be able to save Kate without Anna. It is resolved by Anna getting the right of her own body but gets in a tragic accident and dies so her attorney donates her organs and her sister lives after all.

Character Development

-Anna goes from always doing what her parents want her to do, to trying to find herself. You can also say she once was a hero/saver and then Anna is a “killer” because she filed the petition.

-Campbell goes from once being able to love someone to having a tragic accident and then blocking everyone out of his life. But when Anna comes in his life he finds himself opening up and letting her in. He then lets Julia back into his life.

-Jesse goes from being a rebel that his parents couldn’t control to a teenage boy that needs his parents.

-Kate and Brain mostly stayed the same through the book.

-Sarah goes from being all about Kate to realizing she needs to pay more attention to her other two kids. This was all because of Anna’s lawsuit.

Recommendations

I would recommend this book to anyone that likes books about real events and things that are not made up. It would be a good book for reading groups because you can interpret the story in different ways. What I am saying is it would be a good discussion for people on parenting and what is right. Since My Sisters Keeper is fiction I would recommend it to all fiction readers. I see it as a book that girls would like and not guys.

Best and Worst Parts of the Book

Best: The best part of the book would probably be Anna trying to find out who she really is. In her quest of finding herself she dies. This is a twist because you would expect Kate to be the one that would pass away. That is what I like about the Book.

Worst: The worst part of is is Kate wants to die. I can understand this to a point but asking your sister to file for the lawsuit is a little extreme. I know after awhile you would be sick of going through all of the surgeries and the pain but having put that kind of pressure on your sister is just weird. Having to go on with life knowing your sister is dead because of what your decisions were.

Character-
Anna: She is like a hero because she is saving her sister's life. She is also a seeker because she is going to find something that is better for her own life.
Kate: She is like Anna's sidekick in away or her friend.
Sarah: She is like the wicked stepmother, only not a stepmother. She is all about Kate and not about Jesse or Anna. She could also be seen as a caregiver.
Brian: He is a hero because he saves people since is a firefighter. He could also be seen as a traitor because he was suppose to be on Anna's side in the trial but then switched to Sarah's.
Campbell: Superhero because he is helping Anna get her freedom.
Julia: She helps others do what is right therefore, she is a caregiver.
Jesse: He is like a orphan because he is ignored by his parents and he was sent to live over the garage in the apartment.

Final Post of the Book!!

Sarah- In her closing argument she basically says that she's always loved Anna even before she met her. She admits that she jumps at every little thing that might cure Kate but she only wants to give her kids the world. Sarah said she didn't want to go to court and that she's always is second guessing herself when it comes to decisions about Kate, Anna, and Jesse. She realizes the lawsuit was never about donating a kidney, it was about being able to make your own choices.

Campbell- He says that in ten years Anna is going to be an amazing person and that he won't be surprised if Anna did give Kate the kidney after all. There was a short recess but when Judge DeSavo comes back in he says that he declares Anna medically emancipated from her parents and that Campbell will be her medical power attorney until Anna in 18 years old.

Anna- Campbell and Anna are in his car on their way to the hospital. They are talking about life and Anna tells him that in ten years she'd like to be Kate's sister.

Brian- Brian gets called out to a wreck. It was a T-bone and three were injured. On the BMW they had to jaws of life. Brian crawls over the truck a sees a dog coming out. Just then he realizes that Anna is in the car. When they get her out, she has a pulse but it is very weak. They get to the hospital and they can hear Campbell's voice trying to find out information on Anna. The only thing that is keeping Anna alive is the respirator and she is also brain dead. The doctor also asks if they want her to be a organ donor. Campbell answers for them saying that there is a girl upstairs that needs Anna's kidney.

Sarah- Her and Brain go into Anna's room after they take out all her organs. They turn off the respirator and she rubs Anna hoping that it would make it hurt less.

Kate: 2010- She said for a while after Anna died, Brian claimed that he saw Anna in the night sky and Sarah said that she knew Anna would come back to her by signs. Kate blamed herself that Anna died because if it wasn't for her, Anna wouldn't have ever filed for the lawsuit, she wouldn't have had to sign the papers, she wouldn't have had to be at the intersection at that time. The kidney transplant nearly failed and it has been eight years since her last relapse. She wonders if Anna knows that they went to Campbell and Julia's wedding and if Anna understands why they don't talk to them anymore. Also if she watched Jesse graduate from the police academy. Kate now teaches children how to dance. She puts pictures of Anna in a envelope and puts them in a drawer so in case she thinks that she is losing Anna, she can pull them out.

Sarah: Present Day- When she is cross examining her husband, she starts to think about the past and how much they had fun when Kate was in remission. But she was talking out loud and Brian agrees. When there was a break Sarah went out to the vending machines and Brian comes up and tells her that oreos were her best shot. She asks him if he thought they were good parents and he tells her that he doesn't know anymore. That same day Anna and Brian move back home. Sarah tells Anna that she reminds her or herself.

Julia- She goes running at 4:30 in the morning and her sister asks if she is OK. Julia tells Izzy that Campbell did the same thing once again. When she gets to the court house she is greeted by Campbell's dog. Judge pulls her around the corner where Campbell and Anna were fighting. She tells him that he is afraid to actually find out that he has a working heart if he lets people in his life. When he actually is about to tell Julia what Judge, the dog, is for he is interrupted by Judge DeSalvo.

Campbell- Anna won't talk to Campbell because of what he said to her out in the hall way so when Sarah is questioning another person, he writes her a note about the doctors last name and makes her laugh.She quickly writes that she still hates him. The doctor told Judge DeSalvo that parents need to be the parents because the children can't be.

Julia- When she is getting questioned by Campbell she tells him that she doesn't know what to do for Anna and that she is split up about her decision. This is when Campbell's dog starts to act up.

Campbell- When he is questioning Julia, Anna decides that she has something to say to everyone.

Anna- By now Anna is on the platform and Judge, the dog, is going crazy. Anna tells him the reason she filled for the petition was because her mom asked for the kidney. Also because someone convinced her to file it and that was Kate. This is when Campbell falls on the floor.

Brian- He realizes that Campbell is having a grand mal seizure. Judge knocks over the briefcase and grabs a bite block for Brian. When Campbell awakens he vomits on the floor and he is hooked up to a IV line. Campbell realizes that he had a accident when his seizure happened. Campbell tells Brain that he has been having them since he was 18 because of a car crash that had caused head trauma.

Campbell- Julia come into see Campbell, he tells her that he's been having seizures since two days before they graduated. He told her the reason he ignored her was because he said she deserved better then him and that he didn't want to take her freedom away from her. Julia told him that he should of let her decide for herself. Then she tells him that he won't be the one leaving her she's leaving him..in another fifty or sixty years.

Anna- Anna goes in to the men's bathroom to talk to Campbell because it is the only quiet place they can talk. Then they go back into the courtroom and Campbell resumes his questioning and Anna tells him that Kate asked her to kill her. When she told Kate she wouldn't be a donor anymore, Kate told her thank you.

Kate- They all go on a field trip to go talk to Kate because Judge DeSalvo wanted to talk to her. Kate told him she was expecting him to be there because it always comes back to her. Kate tries to apologize to Sarah and Sarah tells her don't be because it was the best time ever.

Anna- It starts out with the first recess of the trial. Campbell asks her how she thinks it is going, and she tells him even if they win, they don't. They go back in to the court room where Campbell questions Dr. Bergen and then Sarah questions him also. Then there is another recess.

Sarah:2002- Sarah tells a story about how Kate met Taylor, he has AML. They start to go out on dates and visiting each other in the hospital. Taylor asks Kate to the hospital prom and three days later he dies. Sarah knew this but didn't tell Kate until a month afterwards.

Jesse- He stays in the hospital with Kate while everyone else is at the court house. Because he is there it throws Kate off. They talk about what they would come back in, in another life.

Brain- He goes to the school where someone started a fire and the whole north side was gutted out. He found a cigarette while look around the mess and realized who the arsonist was. He goes to Jesse's apartment where he waits for him to come home. When Jesse comes in Brian starts to yell at Jess and at first Jess did not break but then tells brain that he couldn't save her meaning Kate. Brian pulls Jesse into his arms and tells him he will not tell anyone no matter what.

Campbell- Starts out by questioning Br. Chance. He asks him things slowly and waits a while for another one. Dr. Chance says that he doesn't recall Anna's surgeries or anything being anything serious. When Campbell and Anna are eating lunch, Julia walks in. Anna tells Campbell that she has to go to the bathroom so that Julia and Campbell can be alone. Then when Campbell takes Anna back to the fire station, Anna realizes that he was invisible too when he was a kid. The next day, Campbell examines Brian who is suppose to be his key for the case. But when Brian is asked if Anna should still be a donor for Kate he says yes when he is suppose to say no. Then during the break Campbell tells Anna that she has to testify but she simply tells him that she can't and won't.

Anna- It starts out with Anna, Kate, and Sarah in the hospital acting like there is nothing wrong because the trial is coming up. Anna and Sarah get into a fight so Anna leaves. Later that day she is talking to Julia telling her about boys and if Julia thought that Campbell was cute. Before Anna went to bed her mom called to tell her that she was sorry for what she said earlier at the hospital and that she wanted to say good night. After she gets off the phone with her mother she goes up onto the roof and watches the stars.

Brian- Brian goes to the hospital to see Kate but she is asleep. Brian tells Sarah that he is going to speak on Anna's behalf at the trial because he thinks Anna is right.

Sarah- She is still talking in the past. She finds out that Anna plays hockey. They realize that Anna is really good at something and that she loves it. Then one night Kate wakes up with blood coming out of her nose, rectum and the sockets of her eyes. Once at the hospital Brian slips out and when Sarah finds him he is writing a eulogy for Kate because he knows that she is going to die. On the eleventh day at the hospital Kate goes in to a coma and the doctor tells them that they need to say their good byes but then later Kate squeezes Sarah's hand. When Sarah goes home to see Anna and Jesse, Anna tells her that she has been accepted to this hockey camp, Sarah tells her that she can't go because they might need her to donate more stuff for Kate while she is gone.

Anna- Campbell, Anna and Brian go to Campbell's office because Sarah wants to make a deal. The deal was that if Anna donated her kidney she wouldn't ask for anything else even if the transplant doesn't work but Anna tells her that she can not accept the deal.

Julia- Goes out to dinner with Campbell to talk about the case. Campbell takes her on his boat to talk because he knows this way she won't and can't leave him. Campbell tells her about the deal but some how turns it into about him and her and they start to rekindle what they use to have.

Campbell- He leaves Julia his car keys so when she wakes up she can go get ready for court. When he gets to the court house he finds out that Anna is missing so he goes to find her. He goes to the hospital and finds her there. But on their way back to the court hose he pulls over at a park to ask her what is going on and why she is going to court. When they get to the court house, Campbell cross examines Sarah and when he asks about Anna she always answers about Kate.

Campbell- Campbell goes to the hospital to try to find Anna. He can't find her so he go to talk to Dr. Bergan and when he walks into the office he finds the Doctor busy doing Tai Chi. Campbell went to go get Anna's medical files because the Doctor sent the wrong files. He finds out that they don't have a file for her because her procedure didn't go before the ethics committee. When he was leaving he runs in to Julia in the elevator. Julia tells him that Kate's doctor said that he doesn't think Kate is strong enough for the kidney transplant. Julia also says that she knows what is right for Anna she just needs her to commit because every time Anna's mother says something she backs off. Campbell gets a call from Anna. Jesse stole Judge Newbell's car. Anna wanted Campbell to represent Jesse and he agrees not knowing why he did. Campbell gets Jesse out but he gets his divers license taken away.

Brian- Campbell goes to talk to Brian when he drops off Anna. Brain tells Campbell that he thinks Anna is right and that he would tell the judge that at the hearing. The next day, there was a ambulance call. Some girl OD on something.

Sarah- Finds out that the insurance company will not pay for the transplant because they do not think it is necessary at this time. They have agreed to only pay for ten percent. But her sister comes to watch the kids during the operation and hands them a check for $100,000 covering the cost of the operation. But Brian refuses because the guys at the fire station called people nation wide for donations. But then she later finds out the the donation was only $10,000.

Jesse- Since Jesse no longer has his vehicle he steals a dump truck. He goes to see the homeless guy Dan to get his stuff and asks if he would like to come with him to light the building on fire. When he lights the shed on fire Dan tells him that there was a homeless guy living in there but not anymore. So Jesse goes in and burns his and on a piece of metal but finds Rat and brings him out of the shed. Once he puts him down he starts running in the opposite direction.

Julia- It starts out with Julia and Brian going to the hospital. They find out that Kate is awake and when Sarah sees Julia there Sarah freaks out. A few days later, she is allowed to talk to Kate. Julia asks her about Jesse and what kind of kid he is, and how close her and Anna are to each other.

Sarah- Talks about how when Jesse was little he was suppose to get soccer cleats but Sarah told him that she was too busy worrying about Kate when all she was doing was sitting on the couch doing nothing. Then she recalls when Anna had to donate blood for Kate and Brian didn't think that it was a good idea. But Sarah didn't listen and took Anna anyway and Anna started to kick and scream because she didn't know what was going on

Anna- Starts out with Anna and her parents in the cafeteria at the hospital. Her mother tells her it is ok to stop and Anna thinks that she means that she doesn't have to be a donor anymore. Then a deputy come and hands Sarah a temporary restraining order. So Sarah and Campbell go to the court to talk to the Judge about it. When Anna and Brian were out sitting in the hall, they decide to move into the firehouse so they can clear their heads.

Campbell- In the court room, they are talking about dismissing the restraining order but if Sarah was to even say one word about the lawsuit to Anna, she would be removed from the house. Once they were dismissed Anna was no where to be seen. Julia wants to talk to Campbell about the trial but he says he has a "appointment".

Jesse- He comes home to find Julia sitting on the doorstep waiting for him. She was trying to talk to him about Anna but all he was concerned about was to get Julia to go out on a date with him. But when he does start to talk to her, he told her how when he was little it was always about Kate and that his parents would forget about him. He also tells her that Anna has never has a choice about anything.

Brian- Him and Anna move into the fire house and just after midnight they get a ambulance call and Anna goes with. A elderly women fell and had gotten a head injury. While going to the hospital Brian realizes that Anna is holding the ladies hand and is calming her down. Anna asks him if the lady will live and Brian lies to her. Once they get back to the station they go up on the roof and watch the meteor shower.

Sarah, Anna's mother- Is about the past years when she was pregnant with Anna. Sarah and her husband go on T.V. to tell their story about how Anna was made, they shared information on hate mail that they have gotten because people are thinking that they are trying to make a designer baby when they really didn't get to pick what color of eyes she will have or what color of hair or if she will be six feet tall. Then she goes on to the night that Anna was born saying that she was the most worried about how umbilical cord was cut and that they nurses were very careful with it.

Julia- (A new character that is introduced) She is now Anna's guardian ad litem. She takes Anna to the zoo to try to get her to open up but Anna doesn't. All she tells Julia is that she use to play hockey and that she doesn't have any friends because you can't have anyone over when your sister needs to rest all the time. Then when they go back to Anna's house Jesse's jeep is back from the hospital and her mother comes out yelling at Anna until she realizes that Julia is with her. Julia asks Sarah if she has anytime to talk but Sarah tells her no because Kate has been readmitted to the hospital. So Julia leaves and goes to see Campbell and when she gets there you can tell that they've had a past together.

Campbell- He is at his office doing paper work when Julia walks in. They talk a little about their past and you find out that they use to go out. They then talk about the case and Julie tells Campbell that Anna's mother is saying that the trial is not going to happen. Campbell is furious and says that he will have the court take Anna out of the house until the trial is over with, but Julie tells him that it's not right to do that. He then goes into memories about when he first met Julie and what she looked like and how everyone though that she was weird because her hair was pink. He then switches back to the present day. He goes to Anna's house and he talks to her about Julia. Anna and Campbell talk about everyday things, he tells her that he has never done this kind of thing where he goes to clients houses and just talks to them. Campbell then goes to Julia's apartment to give her Anna's medical records. Campbell gets into a fight with Julia's sister Izzy thinking it was Julia. Julia and Campbell start to talk about what they have been up to since they have not been taking since high school. But then his dog Judge senses that his pulses start to go weird so therefore he has to leave.

Anna- She talks about her childhood and how when she looks around the family room there is barley any picture of herself, unlike Kate. She says when you have some kind of disease or sickness, everyone treats you nicely and when you have a sister that is sick you are also treated with respect. When Jesse comes to pick up Anna she tells him that she would like to try a cigarette and he laughs at her knowing that she would not like it and he was right. Anna told him that she would like to go see Kate at the hospital so Jesse told her that he would make a distraction for her so their mother would leave the room. So he comes down the hospital hall acting like he is drunk and recking into things when Sarah hears this, she comes out and takes him down to the cafeteria. Anna said that Kate use to say she liked it when people forgot that she was sick because they thought she was a normal and nothing was wrong with her.

Brian- There is a fire and a little girl is stuck in the apartment so Brian goes in to save her but the little girl was not in the room where she was suppose. Then he thinks to himself, "Where would I go if I was scared?" He realizes the mothers room. Brian finds her and brings her out to the mother that is waiting outside. Next Julia came to see Brian to talk to him about Anna and what he thinks is right for her. Brian tells her that if Anna wasn't ok, she wouldn't have filed the lawsuit.

Anna's parents find out that she is suing them. One of the families friend, who is a policeman, Vern , served Sarah the papers. At first Sarah did not understand and then taking time to read and look the papers over she realizes that Anna is suing her. When Sarah starts to yell some think happens to Kate so Sarah is occupied with her. This is the time Anna leaves with her brother Jesse and finds out that the last time her dad was paged Kate was being diagnosed. When they come in from driving around, Anna describes her mom as coming in like a hurricane. Sarah wants Anna to get rid of her lawyer saying that they can handle this as a family. Anna refuses saying that she has a choice about her life also. Later on that night Kate tells Anna that she can lose her sister but she doesn't want to lose her best friend.

Sarah- She explains how they got to pick how Anna was born so they knew what they were expecting, as in the genes. She also said about what it was like when Kate was first diagnosed with leukemia.

Campbell, Anna's Lawyer- When he gets in his office he finds Anna polishing the door knobs just like they had agreed to. Mrs. Fritzgerald calls and says that he is no longer needed because she talked to Anna about it and said that Anna wanted to drop the charges. After he got off the phone with Sarah, Campbell actually asks Anna if she was dropping everything and she tells him no. They later find out that the judge that is assigned to Anna's case his name is Judge DeSalvo. His daughter was killed by a drunk driver. Campbell also finds out that Sarah is a attorney and she is representing herself.

Anna- Anna skips from the present back to the past. At one point she is talking to Judge DeSalvo asking him if there has to be a trial. He tells her that there doesn't have to be one, her parents just have to agree to medical emancipation and that would be the end. Later the judge appoints a guardian ad litem to spend two weeks with Anna.

Jesse- He is a arsonist. He'll set fires and watch his father come and put them out. One he gets home his mother is freaking out because Kate is throwing up blood. Jesse picks her up and brings her to the hospital. The doctor tells them that Kate is in a pretty grave clinical state and that Kate might not be able to live much longer with her kidneys the way they are. So Jesse asks if his would work since you don't have to be a perfect match. But then he tells his mom he just wanted to know.

My Reading History

I love to read. I mostly read during the summer time or during school breaks. This is because I have more time and I don't have to worry about getting homework done. I read anywhere that it is quiet like in my room. The time that I read is during the night time but then again the time doesn't matter if it is the summer time and I'm not working. I tend to read a lot when I am bored or if I have nothing else to do. The only time that I quite reading a book is if it is something that is very stupid. If I don't get the book i will read it a few times or ask someone that has read it already.

There are many different types of books I have read. Such as, mystery, love stories, tragedies, ones that teach life lessons and even killings. Some books that i have read are the Twilight series which are Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. I have read Angels Fall, Blue Smoke and many more by Nora Roberts. Also the Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien, Change of Heart, Nineteen Minutes, The Tenth Circle, Vanishing Acts, My Sisters Keeper (the book I am reading now), Second Glance, Perfect Match, Salem Falls, Plain Truth, Keeping Faith, Harvesting the Heart all by Jodi Picoult. I'm not into Harry Potter.

Beginning of the Book...

My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult was published in 2004. The chapters are different characters, so it gets confusing sometimes. Anna is a thirteen year old girl that was born to save her sisters life. Whenever her sister Kate is hospitalized, Anna is too. Katie has acute promyelocytic leukemia. So far Anna has given a lot of things to Katie from her own body. Such as, cord blood, she has given Kate cells when she has a relapse, doctors have taken bone marrow many times, granulocytes, and peripheral blood stem cells. Now she is being told that she has to give one of her kidneys to her sister. But Anna doesn't want to, so she goes and gets a lawyer who's name is Campbell Alexander. When Anna tells Campbell that she wants to sue her own parents for the right to her own body he thinks that she is talking about her being pregnant. Once she explains to him what all is going on he agrees to represent her. Anna tells him that she does not have any money so he tells her she can shine his door knobs in the office. The chapter that is for Anna's mom, Sarah, is about when her and Brian, Anna's father, first found out that Katie was diagnosed with leukemia. The chapter that is for Anna's father, Brian, is about how he realizes that no one ever pays a lot of attention to Anna or Jesse, Anna and Kate's older brother, because everything is always about Kate. Brian is a Firefighter so he goes to the fire station on most nights so he calls the firehouse his second home. This is what is happening in the first 50 pages.
